New Annual Lecturer Orientation

Teach and Travel in Europe. In August 1984 I had never been outside the US and yet, after reading the UMUC job ad, I found myself on a plane headed to Frankfurt. I was one of a group of new Annual Lecturers, and I was unsure what was ahead of me. Arriving in Frankfurt, one of the first people to greet me was this tall fellow, Joe Arden. And sitting on my left at dinner that night was John Golembe.

The orientation week in Heidelberg was wonderful and set the tone for my tenure with UMUC in Europe. Interesting colleagues, caring administrators, fun dining, interesting German culture, and embedding with the military culture helped prepare me for my adventure.

I was assigned to Weisbaden to teach at Lindsay Air Station with Joe DeGaulle as ESO. Joe Shapiro was my Area Director. Franny Hopkins helped me find my car that I would pack all my wordly possessions and head off on the Autobahn towards my first class with UMUC.

Teach and travel in Europe. Yes, indeed!
