JAY D. DOBBIN Although he served briefly in the European Division, Dr. and Father Jay D. Dobbin was an Asia Marylander from 1981 to 2004. A former U.S. Army captain, as well as former ski instructor and trainer of U.S. Army ski troops, Jay earned two Catholic University Ph.D.s (anthropology and sociology) as well as earned a degree in theology while at Casa Santa Maria in Rome. Multi-lingual and a passionate fan of classical music, Jay was the quintessential Asia Marylander; an exotic travel enthusiast (particularly in Micronesia and the South Pacific), a student-applauded classroom performer, an accomplished writer, and said Catholic masses on the side. Approaching pedagogical tasks with a certain missionary-like zeal, Jay took on a myriad of Asia Maryland administrative assignments as well, such as assisting in the creation of distance learning opportunities, and, especially, serving for many years as coordinator of Maryland programming on his beloved U.S. Territory of Guam. Fighting cancer, Jay returned to priestly duties in Montana during 2004. But, even there, he led an Asia Maryland-like "circuit-riding" life, bringing the Mass to small, isolated, and snow-bound communities on both sides of the Canadian border. He died there in late-2011, and with few of his neighbors knowing that an accomplished, and adventurous, professor-scholar was in their midst. He is missed.
